Andean Carnival
...A photo expedition to be part of the carnival, to live from inside, along with the locals, the most important, the traditional festival of the Northwest Argentina. This Andean celebration is full of native root’s rituals and ceremonies. Aborigine’s spirit that comes from more than 10,000 years ago and merged with the Christian dogma brought by conquerors without disappearing. Masks and customes will appear in the groups (comparsas) that cross the streets, accompanied by bands of musician with traditional Andean instruments like tarkas, quenas, erkes, sikuris and big drums. We will see how they unbury and bury “the devil”, the figure that represents Carnival. We will photograph the people invoking Pachamama (Mother Earth) with food and drink offerings so that she allows Carnival to come out her entrails. We will visit small and big villages at the gorge, to may register their life, their environment and their history, all surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.
Except for high altitude conditions the expedition will not be particularly fysically demanding |

From Salta, we will drive
across the beautiful landscape of Humahuaca gorge to Tilcara where we will lodge all nights.
At Tilcara, takes place Thursday godmothers (jueves de comadres),
the day dedicated to women who meet in different places ( the Square, the market) to wish a good carnival. They invite with drinks, food, but more important are the songs (coplas) they share.
We will see them sing, dance, share drinks, celebrating the coming feast
We will also meet some members of the groups that will be present when carnival be unburied the next Saturday.
Bands practice in different places, preparing for the following days

3rd day Friday March 4
Tilcara Uquía Humahuaca Tilcara

Friday before carnival we'll go to Uquia, a small village 30 km from Tilcara, to asist to a special feast, Fiesta de la chicha y la copla.
(Chicha is a beverage with aborigines origins that can be made of corn or peanuts, fermented..)
The locals will show their ability to prepare that beverage..and it will be a great opportunity for us to try, also, all kind of typical, regional meals. On a stage, copleras from all places of la Quebrada and other provinces will sing; After the copleros, people begin to dance. Zambas, carnavalitos (a popular dance of inca origin), and other typical rhythms, played by musicians with guitars and bombos.. In the late afternoon, we will drive to Humahuaca to visit the market, the monument dedicated to the Independence heroes, and surroundings

Saturday is dedicated to unbury the devil of carnival.
At Tilcara square, masks and customes appears in the groups (comparsas) that cross the streets, accompanied by bands of musician with traditional Andean instruments like tarkas, quenas, erkes, sikuris and big drums.
We will follow them, along the
streets until arrive to el mojon, ( a rock mound that distinguishes each group), which is covered by flowers and confetti.
After the devil is unburied, we will drive to Uquia, where the main festivity of unburial will begin,
One of the most attractive moments of the carnival of la Quebrada, devils come down the hill, in middle of music, shouts and fireworks..

5th day Sunday March 6
Tilcara Maimará Tilcara

The day will begin with a visit to a small village near Tilcara , named Maimará, “falling star” in aborigine language.One of the highlights is the cemetery and the impressive background it has..
A rest will be needed to may participate at carnival by night, so we'll go back to Tilcara to may assist later to invitaciones, parties at different houses, where comparsas are invited. |
6th day Monday March 7
Tilcara Salinas Grandes Purmamarca Tilcara

A great panoramic landscape waits for us, as we will drive along Cuesta de Lipan (Lipan slope) and Abra de Potrerillo at 4170 m. sea level to may photograph Salinas Grandes.
On the southern part of the Puna at 3350 m sea level lie more than 12.000 hectares of salty clay.
When coming back along the road, we'll see how are the comparsas doing at Purmamarca, a beautiful small village at la Quebrada de Humahuaca, near Tilcara.. its name means "village in virgin land" and it is famous because of the mountain of the seven colours. |
7th day Tuesday March 8
Tilcara Pozuelos Tilcara

We'll go to Pozuelos lagoon, a national reserve distant about 150 km from Tilcara..It is one of the best examples of an inland drainage basin with saline, intermittent lakes and a few permanent lakes.
The lagoon is impressive and makes perfect mirror to may shoot the sky..
Pozuelos is a nature reserve with thousands of Andean flamingos.
After such marvellous place, it will be time to come back to Tilcara to go on with parties at night Carnival

8th day Wednesday March 9
Tilcara Iruya Humahuaca Tilcara

It is free day for comparsas, the day to rest, so well drive to a charming village, Iruya, that looks like hangued on the mountains.
It is possible to reach it after passing Abra del Condor 4,000 m high
The village retains its narrow, cobbled streets with house bricks, stones and straw.
Many stops at the road, we'll do as there is such variety of fauna.. Condors, foxes, lamas, vicuñas..
We'll arrive at Tilcara late afternoon.

A new driving to Purmamarca, to visit its famous market, one of cheaper at La quebrada, with all kind of local handicrafts...
Near it, there is highlight for us...A long road, 40 minutes walking, called de los Colorados, with a breathtaking, wonderful view while doing it.
At the entrance of the village, we'll see the famous seven colours mountain, also called, Paleta del pintor (painter's paalette)
After that, if no comparsas at Purmamarca, (the schedule is always changing) we'll go back to Tilcara to follow there more
activities and and capture them.

10th day Friday March 11

Next destiny will be Juella, a small village near Tilcara..
If weather allows, we will visit the Pucara, ruins of an old fortress established on a high plateau at the side of the river.
Bigger even that the one, more famous, at Tilcara, it is believed it homed 10.000 innhabitants at inca times.
We'll visit also, the village and the comparsa from there. colourful and sensitive , in music and feelings..
At lunch. we'll try andean typical food, home made at a Juella's home, to may aprehend more about this culture and tastes.

We will visit another pucara, at Tilcara. Pucará is an Inca language Quechua word and its literal translation is "Fortified Place".It is built on top of a hill, which rises about 70 metres above the bed of the Río Grande River, occupying close to 15 hectares.
A great view of the ruins but from this old strategic place, there is, also, a wonderful encompassing view over the access to the Gorge
In the evening, we will stay at Tilcara, accompanying comparsas..
The end of canirval is near.. the devils begin to cry and mourn and the parties will last till late at night..

The last day, where the devil of carnivall will be bury till next year
We will drive to Uquia, the same place where we saw the unbury, to participate of the party preceding it...
Comparsas of crying devils dance invited at houses , sharing with us their last day of festivity
Following them to El mojon, we'll say good bye to the carnival.. They will climb the hill and disappear in the shadows of night...
